Aging: Fruit Flies Break the Chain to a Longer Life
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mitochondria have long had an enigmatic role in the biology of aging. New research in Drosophila reveals an evolutionarily conserved function for the mitochondrial electron transport chain in the modulation of animal lifespan.

Mating Reverses Actuarial Aging in Female Queensland Fruit Flies
Animals that have a long pre-reproductive adult stage often employ mechanisms that minimize aging over this period in order to preserve reproductive lifespan. In a remarkable exception, one tephritid fruit fly exhibits substantial pre-reproductive aging but then mitigates this aging during a diet-dependent transition to the reproductive stage, after which life expectancy matches that of newly e...
متن کاملExtension of Drosophila Life Span by RNAi of the Mitochondrial Respiratory Chain
BACKGROUND Mitochondria have long been proposed to play an important role in the aging process. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, genes important for mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) function stand out as a principal group of genes affecting life span. However, it has been suggested that this may be a peculiarity of nematode biology. In the present study, we have used an in vi...

Research into the mechanisms underlying the process of aging is emerging as an exciting area of biomedical research. Observations challenging the fundamental assumptions of aging have begun to rejuvenate the field, opening up aging research to fresh ideas and approaches. Genetic approaches, which have been successfully used to understand other complex biological phenomena, are beginning to reve...
متن کاملAging and longevity genes.
The genetics of aging has made substantial strides in the past decade. This progress has been confined primarily to model organisms, such as filamentous fungi, yeast, nematodes, fruit flies, and mice, in which some thirty-five genes that determine life span have been cloned. These genes encode a wide array of cellular functions, indicating that there must be multiple mechanisms of aging. Nevert...
